Have you ever noticed how easy it is to accumulate stuff? We buy something because… “This will come in handy someday.” And ten years later, we still have it—and have absolutely no idea what “someday” was supposed to be.
That’s what makes a rummage sale so interesting. You and I can walk through the house and suddenly become the judge of everything we own.
“Do I need this?” “No.”
“Have I used it in the last five years?” “No.”
“Could somebody else use it?” “Probably.”
“So why have I kept it?” “I have no idea.”
And then there are those things we put in the rummage-sale box, only to pull them back out later, thinking, “Wait a minute. I might need this!” Don’t know when. Don’t know why. But something deep down inside says, “I might fix that broken toaster one day.”
Rummage sales teach us something important: sometimes we hold onto things simply because we’re used to holding onto them.
And Scripture reminds us that the same thing can happen spiritually. Hebrews 12:1 says: “Let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely…” The writer says, “Lay aside every weight.” Not everything we carry is necessarily sinful. Some things are simply heavy.
Sometimes we’re carrying things God never asked us to carry in the first place.
Imagine if we had a spiritual rummage sale. We could put some things on the table:
“One slightly used grudge.” “Works well but has been taking up space for 15 years.”
“Regret.” “Barely used since 1995, but somehow still being carried today.”
“Worry.” “Comes in multiple sizes. Never actually accomplishes anything.”
“Guilt.” “Old model. God’s grace has already made this one obsolete.”
And perhaps the hardest item to put on the table would be our past. We sometimes think our past defines us. But God looks at us and says, “That’s not the end of your story.”
A rummage sale is about making room. And sometimes faith is about making room too. Making room for grace, forgiveness, joy. Making room for what God wants to do next.
So, as we prepare for this rummage sale, we’re doing more than cleaning closets and filling tables. We’re reminded of a spiritual truth: We don’t have to keep everything we’ve been carrying. Some things can be released. And when we finally let go, we discover something wonderful: God has already provided what we need for the journey ahead.
And remember, sometimes the greatest thing we can get rid of isn’t sitting in a closet. It’s sitting in our heart.
